Pre-entry requirements :
Before you consider applying for a pub you need to be aware of the minimum training and qualifications needed to enter a pub agreement with Punch
BII Pre-Entry Awareness Training Course
If you have not previously held a lease or tenancy agreement, you must complete the Pre-Entry Awareness Training Course run by the British Institute of Innkeeping (BII), prior to signing any agreement. Click here to link to the BII PEAT ( Pre-Entry Awareness Training) website
Ready for Business Course
You will also be required to attend our five day Ready for Business Programme. This induction course covers all the essentials of running a successful pub and delivers two key qualifications – the BII Award in Licensed Retail Operations and the BII Award in Beer and Cellar Quality. We expect you to complete this programme prior to commencing your agreement. For details of our Ready for Business program visit Punch Training.
If you are an experienced publican you may be exempt from completing our Ready for Business training provided you meet our requirements.
Personal Licence
Punch Taverns holds the premises licence for all of our pubs but to run your own pub you must obtain a Personal Licence.
Full details of the Licensing Act 2003 and your responsibilities as a personal licence holder and the designated premises supervisor (DPS) can be found on the Department of Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) website.
To apply for a personal licence from your local authority you must first obtain the Award for Personal Licence Holders (APLH). Punch has negotiated discounted rates for this with approved training companies, click here for details.
Business Plans
You must be able to provide us with a detailed business plan for your pub, including your plans for operating the business together with detailed profit and loss and cash flow forecasts.
You must take independent professional advice covering your business plan and also with regard to the legal obligations in your agreement and the property that you are taking on.
You will be required to provide evidence of your credit-worthiness and access to adequate funding to support your application for the pub and the execution of your business plan.
